THE ENRIGHTS OF POLK COUNTY, MINNESOTA

THE EARLY YEARS IN AMERICA (1878 - 1903)

This Story Continued from:   Enright's In Canada

Upon their arrival in Polk County the Enrights homesteaded on a piece of property in Huntsville Township. Huntsville lies 2 miles due south of East Grand Forks. The property spanned 160 acres and was located near the northwest corner of Huntsville. Legally this piece of property is called the NW quarter of Section 8 in Huntsville.

Immediately thereafter the Enright family began buying up surrounding land in Huntsville Township and continued to buy until their holdings stretched to over 800 acres. Many of the land purchases were made from the railroad who were granted the land by the government to lay their rails. This land sold for approximately \$6 an acre. It wasn't just Dennis who was buying the land.

His 3rd oldest son Thomas purchased a 160-acre plot of land that lied on the northeast corner of the Enright homestead. While his brother Thomas purchased land in east central Huntsville, just north of the Bushee farms.

After just eight years in the US, Dennis Enright died on his farm in Huntsville Township at the age of 72 on December 12, 1886. Immediately upon his death Catherine took over the farming operation.

Land records suggest that she continued not only to successfully farm the land but to expand it as well. She began by purchasing 160 acres adjacent to the Huntsville homestead in 1891. She continued to buy land and eventually her holdings expanded to over 1000 acres.

In the mid 1870s Catherine's oldest child Mary Ann married Thomas Mason. Maryann was living at home in 1871 and her first child, Ellen was born in 1876 so I would assume their marriage took place in that time span. Incidentally Maryann's two children were the only two grandchildren of Dennis that were born in Canada. Her second child, Dallas, was born in 1878.

In 1880 Maryann and Thomas were living on a farm in Huntsville Township. They moved to Minnesota in 1879, a year after Dennis and Catherine. Maryann died sometime before 1900. An exact date of death is not known for Maryann, who was born in 1848. The 1900 Census shows that Catherine had given birth to 11 children nine of whom were still alive. I have accounted for all nine living children.

The other death was William who drowned in the Red River in 1885. He was 23 years old. William never married. There was no Thomas Mason living in Polk County in 1900. I also could not locate either of their children, who would have been in their early twenties at the time.

In 1880 Richard Enright, mentioned above as Dennis' oldest son, married Johanna Foran at St. Michaels Church. She died a year later. They had no children. Richard, who never remarried, became a driving force in Polk County agriculture.

In 1880 he began his own farming operation and became one of the most successful agribusinessmen in Polk County. His holdings in Huntsville Township eventually grew to 960 acres. Most of this land he rented out and kept busy keeping up repairs. He also served as a supervisor on the Huntsville town board for fifteen years.

In 1895 and 1900 Richard was living with his mother on the Huntsville farm. He moved with her to EGF following her retirement in 1904. In 1910, 5 years after the death of his mother, Richard was again living on the original homestead in Huntsville. This time he was living with his brother Michael, who took over the farm upon his mother's retirement. Richard, who served as the godfather at my grandmother Mary's baptism in 1914, died in 1917 at the age of 68.

On April 22, 1890 Jeremiah Enright, the fifth oldest child of Dennis and Catherine, married Mary Ellen McCoy at St. Michaels Church. Their first child, John Louis Enright, was born on October 2, 1892. John was the first of 6 children born to Jeremiah and Mary. The first four were boys (John, Dennis P., Richard and Jeremiah Jr.) they then had two girls (Leslie and Mary) the last being born in 1903. Jeremiah bought a farm in Grand Forks Township in Polk County. He farmed there before moving on to Alberta, Canada shortly after 1910. I lost track of this family at that time.

Also married during this period was Thomas Enright, the third born son of Dennis and Catherine, who married Margaret Malone circa 1890. Their first child, Mary Laura Enright, was born in 1891. This family eventually grew to include nine (six boys and three girls) children, two of whom (William and Leo) died in infancy. The other children: Edward (Died from tuberculosis in 1919 at the age of 20), Earl (married Lillian Mero), James (Anna Bergland), Gerald (Margaret Nagle), Cora Elizabeth (Frank Austin) Another daughter, Katie, married Rube LeClair and moved to Duluth.

The oldest child of Thomas and Margaret, Mary Laura, married Alan Barrett in EGF in June of 1923. They had six children (three boys and three girls) born between 1924 and 1932 who were raised in EGF. Only the youngest, Jim, who died a week after is 40th birthday, is now deceased. The oldest daughter, Laura ( Moulds), currently lives in Langby, Minnesota while another daughter, Dorothy (Dot Burkhardt ) lives in EGF. Alan Barrett died in May of 1972 at the age of 90. His wife, Mary Laura, died in May of 1991, 5 weeks after her 100th birthday

Earl and Lillian had one son, Earl Jr. and adopted a daughter, Judy. Earl, who was three years younger than his wife, ran a gas station in East Grand Forks. Earl and Lillian died a month apart in January and February of 1974 respectively. Both are buried in Calvary Cemetery. Earl Jr. died in 1992 in EGF.

James and Anna had three children. Barbara, Donald and Mary Patricia were raised on a farm in rural Polk County. James died in June of 1968 at the age of 66. Anna survived him for nearly a quarter century and died on New Years Day 1992. Barbara married Ralph Hangsleben and lives in rural East Grand Forks. Donald married the former Teresa Huart and they run a pair of Ben Franklin stores in Maryland. Mary died in 1955 at the age of thirteen after being hit by a car.

Gerald and Margaret ran a farm in rural Polk County. They had two children. The first child was Edward "Mick" Enright. Edward recently retired after running a large farming operation for years near EGF. His sister Donna married John Driscoll. They too live in rural East Grand Forks

Cora married Frank Austin and they had seven children; Edward, Robert, Margaret, Dorothy Loretta, Adorise, John, and Keith. They were raised on Belmont Road in Grand Forks, near the Voiss Greenhouse which was run by my grandfather. Six of the seven children still survive. Robert died in 1992 at the age of 70. I know that Margaret (Peggy) and her sister Loretta live near each other in EGF but am uncertain of the whereabouts of the others.

Catherine's sons John and Dennis moved on to California sometime before 1900. I have located both of them living in Santa Clara County in 1920. I have not located them in 1900 or 1910 but they were not in Polk County at that time. The pair had already moved to California by the time Catherine died in 1905. Both ran quite successful farming operations in California. John, in fact, ran a ranch.

With the emigration of John and Dennis to California, the death of William, and the children marrying off, by the time 1900 rolled around only Richard, Margaret and Edward remained at home with their mother.

In 1903 Catherine moved with her two youngest children to a home in East Grand Forks and Michael took over the farm. This was the beginning of Michael's farming career which would continue for some forty years.
